Meliz is not Maria in the new West End production of The Sound of Music at The London Palladium - she was the third to be voted off the BBC How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? programme on Saturday 26 August 2006.
Meliz Serman is 23 years old. She has a BMus and Masters in Music Performance and BA Hons Music from City University and voice training at Guildhall. Meliz is currently studying a Masters in Music Performance Studies. She also plays violin and piano. When she was 14, Meliz was a presenter on Nickelodeon and has also sung in a funk/soul band, The Funkadrome who do originals and covers. In addition she also works with a friend doing recitals as part of a vocal duo called Two Voices.
Meliz lives in North London and has a younger sister and brother.
Regarding her similarities with Maria from The Sound of Music, Meliz says: "I'm definitely a flibbertigibbet... although I'm a perfectionist, I have my airy-fairy moments and I often speak before I've had a chance to think about it. If I put my mind to something, I make sure I get it done! I am 100% determined and enthusiastic in whatever I do, and I like to think that I'm a strong person, adding that "to play one of the most popular, loved and respected characters in musical theatre would be a dream come true for me! Like Maria, I'm determined, strong, fun, passionate and ditzy, and I would be honoured to be the person to keep her and her story alive in the West End, with a modern twist."
12 August 2006: For the first of the BBC How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? 'knock-out' shows Meliz sung the Dusty Springfield song 'Son of a Preacher Man' - she obtained enough public phone votes to go through to the next round next week...

'knock-out' shows Meliz sung the Christina Aguilera song 'The Voice Within' - Meliz come bottom of the public vote and so had to sing again with Belinda who came second from bottom. They then sung the Andrew Lloyd Webber duet 'Another Suitcase in Another Hall' from Evita. Afterwards Andrew Lloyd Webber said: "This is a complete and total nightmare. I'm in a quandary - I really am. But on the basis that we are looking for a contemporary Maria, the girl I have to save is Meliz." Thus Meliz returns next week...
26 August 2006: On the third BBC How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? 'knock-out' show Meliz sung the Cyndi Lauper song 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'. In the public phone vote Meliz came bottom for the second week in a row. This time she had to sing again with Helena who came second from bottom. They sung a joint rendition of the Andrew Lloyd Webber song 'Take That Look Off Your Face' from the musical Tell Me On A Sunday. Afterwards Andrew said he wanted to keep Helena in the competition, so Meliz had to say goodbye. Following the format of previous shows, Meliz then lead the others in a rendition of 'So Long, Farewell' from The Sound of Music. Following the show Meliz said: "I'm extremely sad about leaving this experience, I was so lucky to be a part of it. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it will make the sadness of tonight something really positive for the future."
