It’s the 80s and wannabe rock star Robbie Hart is everyone’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life and soul of the party until he gets jilted at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own, until he meets Julia, a sweet waitress. The only trouble is, she’s about to be married. Can Robbie pull off the performance of the decade and win the girl of his dreams? The Wedding Singer, based on the hit movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, comes to The Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre for one week this Spring. Recommended for ages 12 plus.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan is renowned for delivering spellbinding, spiritual performances. Here the company perform the breathtakingly beautiful Moon Water, in which the whole stage is flooded with water and reflections, creating a stunning on-stage work of art. Choreographer Lin Hwai-min has integrated meditation, tai-chi, martial arts and Chinese opera movement with modern dance and ballet, to develop a truly unique dance style – varying from the weighty stillness of a stone sculpture, to floating lyricism, to fierce martial art attack. Moon Water is set to movements from Bach's Suites for Solo Cello, performed live by Mischa Maiskyused. Mirrors appear onstsage, reflecting the image of the moving dancers and the patterns of the white Chinese brush strokes of the set. Water then flows onto the stage, until the floor itself becomes a huge mirror reflecting dancing bodies. Presented as part of thr International Dance Festival Birmingham.

Brought to magical life by this country’s brightest musical entertainer, the legendary Tommy Steele stars alongside a huge company of singers, dancers, and puppeteers in this hit musical which visits The Hippodrome Theatre in Birmingham for two weeks this May. Immortalised in the hugely popular film, Doctor Dolittle is a world-renowned veterinarian who speaks a wide array of animal languages. He sets off from his home in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, England, in search of the Great Pink Sea Snail. Along the way, he and his friends meet such exotic creatures as the Pushme-Pullyu and the Giant Moon Moth. The Oscar Award-winning score includes the hits If I Could Talk To The Animals; I've Never Seen Anything Like It; and My Friend The Doctor. With lavish settings and spectacular effects Doctor Dolittle is the perfect treat for all the family.

The Kirov Ballet - Jewels

The Kirov Ballet from the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg makes its debut at Birmingham Hippodrome in 2008. The 200-year-old Russian company, under the Artistic Direction of Valery Gergiev and Ballet Director Makhar Vaziev, will perform a one week season which starts with George Balanchine's diverse three-act ballet Jewels, a succession of classical divertissements, is inspired by three precious stones: elegant and romantic for Emeralds (set to music by Fauré), hot and jazzy for Rubies (Stravinsky) and glittering and aristocratic for Diamonds (Tchaikovsky).

The Kirov Ballet's debut season at The Hippodrome in Birmingham concludes with Marius Petipa's Don Quixote, one of the sunniest ballet’s in the Kirov’s rich classical repertoire, tells of the rocky romance between Kitri, the playful daughter of a social-climbing innkeeper, and her lover Basilio, a barber who is handsome – but broke. This colourful production bristles with authentic Spanish dances, bullfighters and gypsies – all portrayed with an exquisite blend of wit and bravura.

Still the epitome of 19th-century romanticism, Giselle broke new ground when it was first conceived by the poet Théophile Gautier. This surreal ballet fused the popular appeal of historical local colour, with shadowy spirits – to great tragic and dramatic effect. Marius Petipa, Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, were the choreographic stars of their time, and David Bintley and Galina Samsova's 1999 production for BRB preserves the best of their work.
