Singular Sensations: Joshua Rifkin and Ida Faiella in London for one week only.
Conductor and pianist, Joshua Rifkin has received international acclaim with prominent orchestras including the English Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the City of London Sinfonia. Joshua Rifkin ranks amongst the world's foremost interpreters of Baroque music and is a leading figure in the Scott Joplin ragtime revival. Soprano, Ida Faiella has performed the works of Britten, Gershwin and Stravinsky and more traditionally Bizet, Handel and Verdi at concert halls worldwide. Her theatrical repertoire includes appearances with Donald Swann, Sheldon Harnick and a one-woman show of Sondheim's music Who's That Woman?
"As she took her seat next to Joshua Rifkin for an encore of 'The Man I Love', Ida Faiella winsomely explained that the duo were performing the Gershwin ballad as if they were sitting in their living room. Which went a long way to summing up the problems with this curiously wrong-headed show. A concert that might have held the attention in a garden conservatory, or a small-town lecture theatre at best, seemed totally out of place on the Haymarket's stage... Rifkin shared the stage with Faiella, a classical soprano who negotiated each song competently enough but without coming remotely close to bringing the romantic lyrics to life. With little in the way of a script, the recital limped through what should have been a winning selection of Cole Porter, the Gershwins and Jerome Kern." The Times
