Showcasing the finest in traditional circus thrills and skills, Zippo's Cirque Berserk! in London celebrates the 250th anniversary of the invention of Circus
Bringing this treasured form of live entertainment bang up-to-date in a jaw-dropping spectacular created especially for the theatre. Combining contemporary cirque-style artistry with adrenaline-fuelled stunt action, this astoundingly talented international troupe includes over thirty jugglers, acrobats, aerialists, dancers, drummers and daredevil stuntmen.
Featuring the world’s most hair-raising circus act - the legendary motorcycle 'Globe of Death'.
This production comes into London's West End following two seasons at the the Peacock Theatre as well as Christmas seasons at Winter Wonderland in London's Hyde Park.
"This home-grown slice of slightly new-fangled but essentially traditional contemporary circus is an all-ages commercial entertainment — animal-free, staged indoors and, in what has been officially designated the 250th anniversary year of circus, pretty much adhering to the standard format of one act succeeding another with no discernible scenario to tie it together. Directed by Julius Green, the show doesn't waste time when it comes to offering blood-warming thrills and spills." The Times
"It isn't often, while sitting in the familiar comfort of a West End Theatre, that you are presented with an apparently physically impossible spectacle. This happened to me last Wednesday with the closing highlight of Cirque Berserk!, an amazing company of talented performers... In a lifetime of theatregoing, on both sides of the footlights, I have never seen anything like it." The Sunday Express
"The sight and smell of four motorcycles zipping about inside a giant see-through ball is guaranteed to get your motor running. So when it hits top gear, as it does with the bikers in their 'Globe Of Terror', Cirque Berserk! whips up an adrenaline-rush of energy. But this throwback to the days of variety circus doesn't quite manage to keep the action at full throttle. Though there are plenty of highlights studded through the hectic cavalcade of acts, a bit of judicious editing wouldn't go amiss. If it cut down on the bendy ladies and ho-hum clowning and gave more space to its quality turns, the production would be top-drawer." The Metro
"We all, it seems, love to run away to the circus now, even if it's just for an evening. Circus has entered the mainstream of our entertainment culture thanks to Cirque du Soleil and its rivals, and expectations grow with each production. The boast of Zippo's Cirque Berserk! is that it's 'real circus made for theatre', that is to say, specifically mounted for a proscenium stage. In truth, I don't think audience members care much about the details of the staging, so long as the acts are superlative. Which they are, almost, although the individual segments are frustratingly short... What this churning turnover of acts doesn't allow us is that mounting sensation of thrill at their skill and that's a pity. Yet Cirque Berserk! deserves credit for its pulsing energy."
