Bounce - Insane In the Brain
The street dance company Bounce present their show Insane in the Brain in London at the Peacock Theatre for a strictly limited three week season following successful seasons here in February 2008 and September 2009 "I can't recall when I last experienced such a fresh, fun and clearly told translation of a piece of contemporary literature into dance" The Times In the confines of a psychiatric hospital, breakdance becomes a way of expressing freedom and rebelling against the iron rule of Nurse Ratched - who happens to be a ballet fan... Insane in the Brain features a fantastic soundtrack including hits from stars like Missy Elliot, Dizzee Rascal, Gotan Project, David Holmes and, of course, Cypress Hill. Inventive set design and choreography are mixed with film and multimedia sequences to produce a fast-paced show that is at times funny, at times moving, and always packed to the rafters with high-octane dance moves. "Witty and inventive" The Sunday Telegraph Insane in the Brain is a street dance version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest based on the play by Dale Wasserman and the novel by Ken Kesey - this production returns to London's Peacock Theatre following a successful season here in February 2008. "The dancing is slick and energetic" The Independent "To the thundering electro beats of artistes such as Dizzee Rascal, Missy Elliott and Cypress Hill, the nine-strong cast of Swedish-based hip-hop dance group Bounce deliver an energetic, funny and moving variation on Ken Kesey's novel, set in an insane asylum where new patient McMurphy upsets the balance of power between the patients and the terrifying Nurse Ratched. I've always felt that hip hop was a limited dance form but Bounce break out of the conventional street structures with a brilliant theatricality and wicked references to popular culture." The Daily Express "It's a bit bonkers and a bit brilliant - and, given that it's a hip-hop dance theatre take on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, what more could you want? Insane in the Brain, by the Swedish company Bounce, makes Ken Kesey's classic counterculture story of power and madness in a mental institution seem designed for a hip-hop makeover... Most impressive is the show's freewheeling way with genre: hip-hop may be the basis, but it's not a constraint. So the choreography never resorts to straightforward display, and the music careens between rap, jazz-funk, metal, Grieg and tango, but is always apt. Combine this with unpretentious performances, atmospheric lighting and versatile sets, and you've got a popular hit." The Guardian "Insane in the Brain is a street-dance version of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by way of its later incarnation as a play. It is produced and performed by Bounce, the Swedish hip-hop troupe. It has been a huge success since its first performances in 2006. And an unlikelier - and more engrossing - use of breaking and popping and all the dizzying rest of it would be hard to find... The choreography, made by the members of the troupe, is virtuosic, varied in its resources - no trick is unexplored, not even the one with the inflatable woman - and engrossing."
